Helping children remain in school also means supporting the schools they attend. Where teaching staff are insufficient, teachers may have to combine classes and students may miss instruction in key subjects. GIPSED recruits and funds additional teachers to support public schools in Odo-Otin LGA.
Responding to school needs
Schools request support through their headteachers or principals. In some cases, including Government Technical School, Inisa, requests have come from community leaders.
GIPSED volunteers previously assessed public primary and middle schools in Odo-Otin, recording teacher numbers, student populations, furniture and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. This work helps the team assess requests against school needs.
Recruiting teachers locally
Schools advertise vacancies within their communities, including through churches and mosques. School management, a parent–teacher association representative and GIPSED staff interview applicants. Preference is given to suitable teachers living in the community, supporting proximity to school and local monitoring.
GIPSED pays the teachers’ salaries, providing continuing support that helps participating schools maintain teaching capacity.
A continuing commitment
The first phase began in 2013 with seven teachers supporting Odo-Otin Grammar School and St Anthony’s RCM Primary School, both in Okuku. That phase ended after two years.
The programme resumed in 2021 with 18 teachers and subsequently expanded to 20 teachers deployed to 14 public schools across Odo-Otin LGA. Salaries are funded entirely from the co-founders’ personal income and, according to GIPSED’s programme record, paid consistently on or before the 26th of each month.
Working with schools and communities
Headteachers, principals, community leaders and religious leaders connect the programme with local needs. Their involvement helps schools coordinate recruitment and maintain a direct relationship with GIPSED.
Teacher support complements student scholarships: assistance with fees helps children stay in school, while additional teachers strengthen the learning environment they attend each day.
