A person’s ability to seek help should not depend entirely on their income. GIPSED’s Access to Justice initiative provides legal support and rights education for people who may otherwise struggle to obtain assistance.
Building a local service
A weekly report for 17–21 January 2022 records work to establish local legal support, including visits to courts and police stations in Okuku and Inisa, stakeholder engagement and preparation of client-registration and interview forms.
The work was coordinated by Legal Officer and Head of Administration Olajumoke Comfort Ojo and GIPSED Project Manager Seun Olaniyan. These early steps helped connect the service with local institutions and organise the handling of enquiries.
Legal representation and rights education
The initiative includes free legal representation and “Know Your Rights” education. It aims to help people understand the support available to them and obtain assistance with their circumstances.
Individual matters are handled through the legal service. Public stories describe the programme without exposing confidential client details.
Reported outcomes
The 2023 brochure reports that four people from Ikirun, Oyan, Inisa and Iragbiji were discharged or acquitted after legal intervention. It also records a fifth person released on bail with proceedings still pending at the time.
These are historical outcomes reported in the brochure. Release on bail is recorded separately from discharge or acquittal, and no later outcome is assumed.
